Good news: India finishes construction of first completely solar powered airport

India opened the world’s first large-scale airport completely powered by solar power on Tuesday.
Cochin International Airport’s solar farm boasts 46,000 panels that have been laid out strategically across 45 acres of land. That was the amount needed to create a facility that is “absolutely power neutral” officials said in a public statement.
Research suggests that the airport will be able to reduce its carbon emissions by 300,000 tons within the next 25 years — or “the equivalent of planting three million trees.”
To give a sense of how much power the airport is generating, the solar farm creates enough electricity annually to power “10,000 homes for one year.”
The project began in March 2013 on a much smaller scale and is now fully functional.
