INCHEON — Indian boxer Sarita Devi stood on the podium during the medal ceremony at the Seonhak Gymnasium, Wednesday, but didn’t bend down for the bronze medal. Instead, she took it and slipped it around South Korea’s silver medalist Park Jin-a’s neck. The Korean appeared too stunned to immediately react.

The abrupt refusal came as the Indian boxer lost a decion to Park in the semifinals of the women’s lightweight class on the previous day at the Seonhak Gymnasium.

“I felt that I should not accept the medal because I deserved to be in the finals,” Sarita said after exiting the arena. “I’m ready to face any repercussions. I did not feel like accepting the medal and so I didn’t.”

It was the latest in a series of controversies in which South Koreans’ achievements have been tainted with claims of a “home advantage” gone too far.

After the match, many questioned the judging, some calling it “dubious” and too much “in favor of the home boxers.”

The judges, none of whom were from Asia, scored the three-round bout by identical 39-37 margins.

When Park was announced as the winner, Sarita wept uncontrollably and her husband Thoiba Singh rushed to the judges’ bench and shouted, “You’ve killed boxing.”

India lodged a protest, but World body AIBA’s technical committee rejected the protest, saying “rules bar any complaints against judges, and protests can only be filed against the decision of the referees.”

India chief boxing coach Blas Iglesias Fernandes said the 3-0 decision against Sarita smacked of a fix.

“Only dishonest people can do something like this,” he said. “It’s a clear case of a pre-determined judgment. In fact, the opponent should have been given a standing count on many occasions, which never happened.”

“The host is clearly taking advantage,” Sarita said. “I’ve left my one-year-old son at home to compete here, and it took just one minute for the judges to spoil everything for me.”

Olympic Council of Asia delegates and boxing officials at the venue did not react to the Indian furor or the protest.

The judges were Mohamed Braham of Tunisia, Albino Foti of Italy, and Mariuisz Jozef Gorny of Poland.

The rejected bronze medal is now in the custody of organizers.

In another boxing event, Devendro Singh of India failed to advance to the semifinals after a loss to South Korea’s Shin Jong-hun in the 49 kg quarterfinal. India once again found fault in the judging.

“I wish these judges could be sacked,” India’s Cuban trainer Bi Fernandez said bluntly. “I suppose the only ones who thought the Korean had won were the judges.”

The wrestling event was also stained with controversy.

South Korea’s Jung Ji-hyun claimed his first Asiad gold in the men’s 71 kg Greco-Roman event with a 9-0 win over Uzbek opponent Dilshodjon Turdiev.

But in the semifinals, the judge had announced Iranian wrestler Saeid Abdevali as winner when Korean officials protested the results.

“Koreans have been proven to ignore all conditions of a fair competition only to gain more medals,” said an Iranian wrestling fan. “I’m not exaggerating. If you take a short look at the match you will see that I’m right. Judgments are blind.”

Along with combat sports, football matches involving the South Korean squad have been also criticized for similar reasons. Referees’ disputed calls have given advantages to the Koreans and led them to the final.

Thailand’s men’s football coach on Tuesday went sarcastic after his side was beaten 2-0 to the hosts in the semifinal match. He was especially unhappy about the referee’s decision to give the Koreans a chance for a penalty kick, which led to the second goal.

“I was far from the spot, but players said it’s not a penalty. However, but the referee called it a penalty. I hope South Korea wins this competition, but not by penalty kicks,” the coach, Kiatisuk Senamuang, said of penalty kicks that South Korean captain Jang Hyun-soo scored on his side’s way to the finals.

Two days earlier, when the South Koreans beat the Japanese 1-0, Jang also scored a decider from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

Japan’s coach Makoto Teguramori also expressed his regret over the game, saying “our side would have won the game if there had been no penalty kicks awarded,” although he did not specifically bring to surface the issue of the fairness over the referee’s call.

After Tuesday’s game, a number of photos insulting the Korean national flag and comments cursing the penalty decision were posted on the Korea Football Association’s homepage.

On the eve of conclusion of Asian games that took place between September 19 and October 4, 2014 in Incheon, I accuse the host nation, Republic of Korea, having unlawfully acquired the assistance of panel of judges and referees, of carrying out a staggering array of abuses regarding fair judgement throughout the competition among participants in particular in free-style and Greco-Roman wrestling.
I request all people who expect sport to be an arena that is supposed to evoke spirit of friendship and excellence among competitors and to bring nations together in a world that is full of tension, to help compile the comprehensive list of litany of abuses perpetrated by those officials in charge of Asian games and associated panel of judges, to expose the apparent systematic and widespread character of un-sportsmanship and corruption among the officials of the host nation and judges in Incheon, South Korea, and to prevent such systematic bias, unrelenting discrimination and enmity against certain teams in some disciplines, to be repeated in another big sport gathering in future.
I ask the United Nations, the Olympic Committee, national and international sport federations, international law bodies against corruption and investigative journalist from world media to investigate the conduct of judges and for the authorities concerned to impose proper measures on those that have brought their office into disrepute, in order to ensure that competition would be fair and host nation authorities cannot interfere or judges do not feel immune in directly and consistently targeting certain national teams to deprive them of gold medals or rulings that favour the host nation (as a way of returning hospitality at best or rendering their services bought). In particular I ask such discriminating referees and favour-returning judges to be retired and barred from judging panels and eliminate further opportunity to discriminate in sport arenas with immunity.
What happened in Incheon was the destruction of trust and desecration of the oath that some Korean officials and certain judges took in conducting their business that unfortunately has overshadowed and blackened the image of the overwhelming number of officials and judges involved that discharged their responsibilities with utmost fairness and impartiality. This has cultural significance, and entails wanton destruction and looting of spirit of fair competition in international arenas, and denial of fundamental rights of competitors who suffered as a result in violation of international law and Olympic protocol.
Finally, I want to express surprise and disdain at the response of National Sport Federations whose competitors suffered and have become demoralized as a result of biased judgement in not supporting their members to the best of their ability, forfeiting as many as half a dozen gold medals and their right to make official complaints and documenting the systematic abuse for bringing it to the attention of sport-loving people of the world.
At this stage I would like to present one clip of evidence that is available on YOUTUBE and I am condiment that this clip alone will manifest the audacity of partial judgements to the full and hope that other people will add to such evidence to expose international sport mafia:

    Hi,

I used to have a lot of respect for south Korea until I saw Sarita’s match. For all Koreans, I am a Manipur like Sarita, I come from the same state as Sarita. Korean films and Korean dramas are more popular in Manipur than the Hindi or Bollywood films because of the ban on Hindi films by terror outfits in the state. Korean dressing styles and hairstyle are very popular among the youth. Not only that, we find a lot of similarities culturally,Korean shamanism and Manipur’s sanamahism….the list can go on…the way how Korean offers flowers and fruits to their dead ancestors. …we do the same…. With all due respect, I as a Manipur, who used to love korean culture, food and TV dramas, have lost all respect of south Korea…. Pls watch the game…again and again….. Park was struggling till the end…with all the punches that landed on her face…and still she won…wow!! That happens only in korea ….another Korean drama…???

So you enjoy Korean films, entertainment, and Korean culture seems to be popular in that side of the world, yet one boxing match is enough to change your whole view on a country? That’s a joke.

“Instead, she took it and slipped it around South Korea’s silver medalist Park Jin-a’s neck”
Very petty behaviour. She had to insult Park by implying that she only deserve the bronze medal. Park was polite with Devi and did not react to this public insult.

This is a huge lost of reputation for south korea. I feel that the organizer give their own country a bad name, inspite of spending so much money organizing the games. Maybe adter this, all South korean winners of this years Asian Games will be regarded suspiciously whether they really did win or because of the organizers helped them unfairly? I feel that the medals of this asian games is also devalued due to lack of fair play. I dont think Sarita really did want the bronze medal back. She was force to accept it for the continuity of her career.

I noticed that the South Koreans in position of authority also like to exert their authority to bully others, especially when criticised. This is not the first time south korean organizers of an event threaten to take action against a participant. A few months ago, South Korea organized a beauty pageant and stripped muss myanmar (the winner) of the crown because they said she did not respect them. WTF! How do you force someone to respect you? Very narrow minded organizer. Search the net and you will find the incident. In Korean culture you see those in high position talk down to those lower than him/her. But outside the country, people dont necessarily bow down to them. I feel they are overexerting themselves and this makes them look ugly.

Many of korea’s gold medals belong to other countries, how can they be proud of their medals when they were earned by influencing the judging panel, just like the 2002 world cup,or as they would call it a love story,I call it the shame story thought.
I’m seriously wondering if cheating is a social norm in Korea, because it seems to happen too often in these games.

    October 2, 2014 at 4:37 PM

There has been a lack of fair play in this Asian games. Korea has lost face in the world scene and have been tagged as ‘Cheaters’ due to a few rotten apples who have tried to unjustly increase the Korean Medal count. The evidence is clear for everyone to see-There are numerous videos on the web of Sarita Devi’s fight, the Mongolian Boxer’s fight etc. Boxing has been the biggest victim. Either the judges appointed by AIBA are corrupt or they are just incompetent. Either scenario does not paint AIBA or Korea in a good light !

My recommendation to South Koreans is that we should no longer hold any more Olympic events in our home land in the future. It is best not to get involved especially events such as Asian games because there will be nothing but hate coming from all sides. Since we still have Pyong-chang winter Olympic left to do, lets do our best on holding that one, but after that, no more Olympic events in South Korea please.

Koreans are so insecure with themselves. They need gold medals to feel complete, even if it is not earned.

Koreans will say “everyone cheats” and point to controversial Kim Yuna’s loss of Gold at the olympics. However Yuna’s silver medal was very close. There are arguments on both sides.

These cases are pretty clear cut

  13. Edward

    October 2, 2014 at 11:48 PM

Aah, how beautiful. Hating the country and people over controversial issue in a SPORT EVENT. Calling Koreans insecure when in fact you guys take the sport so seriously that you decide to hate the country and the race over a sport corruption. To me, as Korean-American myself, I don’t give two bits of a rats ass about Asian Games. I couldn’t care less if Korea didn’t win anything. I’m even laughing that Korean footballers get military exemptions over winning Asian Games. That’s the only reason why I’m here.

So I guess everyone should hate the U.S. since they stole gold medal from Kim Dong Sun and awarded to Apolo Anton Ohno, right? Not only that, US has done lot of rigged events to steal medals from different countries. I guess everyone should hate Russians for awarding gold to Adelina Sotnikova instead of Yuna Kim, right? Or how about the way China cheated against Koreans in short track speed skating. I guess everyone should hate China for that as well. Great Britain attempted to cheat their way to victory against Korea during 2012 London Olympics by awarding two penalties. So I guess we should all hate Great Britain by your logic. I’ve seen lot of rigged events in Muay Thai matches where Thai guy wins over Korean just because he’s “Thai” and he’s “authentic” regardless of the result. So I guess we should all hate Thai people based on your logic.

Get a life, kids. Grow up. Go find something better to do with your lives and be more productive in this world while it’s better to let these events go. Corruption happens everywhere. When Yuna Kim got robbed, I didn’t go cry and whine like a little baby I’m witnessing on this page. I just laugh and say “home advantage, oh well.”.

This is the reason why hosts’ results do not count as true results. True results is shown when results are held in different soil.

    • Jim

      October 3, 2014 at 12:46 AM

South Koreans are known cheaters not only in sports. They do the same in business. And if you don’t give a “rats ass” why are you here commenting then?

    • Joe

      October 4, 2014 at 12:12 AM

it’s funny how you justify cheating by reciting other incidents of cheating.

    • R

      October 7, 2015 at 6:56 PM

These were not simply random cheating where a few players or a few referees are corrupted. The South Korean sports authority took the cheating to a whole new level. Setting the badminton stadium’s A.C. to control wind direction? That was an example of a carefully planned and organized cheating. And judging from the number of cases uniformly occurring across the competitions, there were a large number of people involved. Let the numbers and all the video records speak for themselves. I don’t hate your country and I actually respect Koreans who own up and admit that many of those involved in the organizing the games were corrupted. But anyone who is not biased should be able to see why there are so many disappointed, heartbroken, and furious fans & athletes rather than assuming that everyone’s reaction is a result of hatred.

  14. Jim

    October 3, 2014 at 12:44 AM

South Koreans are well known dishonorable cheaters who will do anything to win. Unlike the Japanese, fair play, sportsmanship and honor mean nothing to them. Now the world knows what a garbage country South Korea is.

    • Edward

      October 3, 2014 at 9:55 AM

Aah yes, Japanese so fair that their referee was bought and stole the game for Brazil against Croatia, right? So I guess by your logic, Japanese people are crooks who take bribes. They also cheated their way and played dirty in baseball against Korea in WBC. Nice sportsmanship, huh?

I was brought here because I heard Korean footballers got exempted from military over winning football in Asian Games. Asian Games is a joke. The concept of it is a joke anyways. Real deal is at the Olympics, World Cup, international event where everyone all around the globe joins, not just Asians. Asian Games is like event for “special” people who couldn’t be successful in Olympics or worldwide that they need to make themselves event to lower difficulty level and win it to feel better. It’s for scrawny chumps. Why not compete at an international level?

An awesome interview from Sarita Devi Laishram: She has no ill feeling towards the Korean opponent or the host country but want the judging to be transparent and honest. Even though she is from a poor background or country or whatever but her heart and thought is much more richer and advanced then others. Follow the link to read the interview in English: I have put the Google Translate Korean version below-

The boxing events are full of controversies. 2014 Asian games is a good example. Judges were not Koreans. Why then to blame the Koreans? The boxing federations should come out of their old habits of employing cheats as referees. Anyway old habits die hard. I believe they are now getting ready to continue their cheating habits in the coming Olympics as well. Is there an official briefing to the referees to support the host nation prior to such world events?
