Plans are underway to name a section of Northern Blvd. in Flushing, N.Y., “Korea Way,” the Korean American Association of Queens said Friday.

The association said it sent an official construction proposal to the office of City Councilman Peter Koo. The proposal suggests calling the stretch of Northern Blvd. between 149th St. and 165 St. “Korea Way.”

Koo plans to send a legislative request as soon as possible in order to help Flushing’s “Korea Way” become a second hotspot for Korean culture after Manhattan’s Koreatown, his office said. Koo has, however, requested some changes to the association’s proposal, as the desired stretch may be too long.

The association also plans to install a sign reading “Welcome to Koreatown” if the area’s road name is changed.

“The city council usually combines the many requests of council members into two periods of voting every year, once in the first half and once in the second half,” said Scarlett Cho, Koo’s aide. “Taking that into account, there is a big possibility that the request may pass early next year instead of this year due to time constraints.”
