SACRAMENTO —  Assemblywoman Young Kim attended the swearing in ceremony Monday inside the California state Capitol in Sacramento.

Surrounded by 79 other new lawmakers who took their vow following the November general election, Kim officially became the state legislator representing District 65.

Kim, a Republican from Fullerton, is the first Korean American from Southern California elected to the state assembly since Assemblyman Alfred Song in 1962.

“My longing, as well as that of the Korean American community, became a reality,” Kim said after the ceremony. “I give my word to represent both the Korean American community and the people of my district in working toward economic revitalization, job creation and policy development for education and the environment.”

Among Kim’s first actions were the introduction of Bill No. 42, in relation to the funding and mandatory fees in state public postsecondary schools, and to put a spotlight on Resolution No. 3, which calls for Jan. 13 to be officially designated Korean American Day.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by 80 new state legislators and their families.

Assembly Republican Leader Kristin Olsen welcomed Kim and said she hopes to see more interest and involvement from Korean Americans in politics.
