Top diplomat calls for ambassadors’ support to solve security challenges

SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) — Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha called on foreign ambassadors based in Seoul on Thursday to help South Korea find a way to solve the gravest-ever security environment on the Korean Peninsula.

“Challenges on the diplomatic front are particularly daunting … as we have a security and diplomatic environment that is as grave as it has ever been,” Kang said in a reception to introduce her to about 120 foreign ambassadors based in Seoul.

“Meanwhile expectations placed upon the foreign ministry by the people and the president himself … have brought an enhanced level of attention to and expectations for the ministry. So the demands are tall and we have to find a way to deliver,” Kang told the foreign emissaries. “And of course we will be counting on each and every one of you to work with us.”

Referring to her recent trips accompanying President Moon Jae-in to Washington D.C. and Germany for summits, she also stressed, “By all signs, the six months of absence of summit diplomacy has been overcome.”

“I am sure that level of activism on the part of the president himself will be maintained and I will certainly be there to support him,” the top diplomat said.

During the reception she also called on the countries to support South Korea for its successful hosting of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and its accompanying Paralympics as well as the country’s bid to win the right to host the World Scout Jamboree for 2023.

“We very much want to make this a celebration of peace through sports … which is even more important on this peninsula where the message of peace constantly needs to be nurtured,” she said, referring to the Olympics.

The reception was Kang’s first official meeting with the foreign diplomatic corps in Seoul and she focused on informing them of the new administration’s North Korea and broader foreign policies.

    well, if things go the way the First Lady of Korea wishes, we can kiss North Korea’s ass by acknowledging South Korea’s past history of denouncing the atrocities of the communist state.
