UCLA officials said the university is the most applied-to four-year university in the nation.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A record number of more than 119,000 potential students submitted applications to UCLA for the fall semester, the university announced today.

The applicants include more than 97,000 prospective freshman and 22,000 prospective transfer students.

UCLA officials said the university is the most applied-to four-year university in the nation.

“These numbers show that our relentless efforts to recruit students from every corner of the state are bearing fruit,” said Youlonda Copeland-Morgan, UCLA associate vice chancellor for enrollment management. “They also show that our message to low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students — that they, too, have a place at UCLA — is getting through.”

UCLA officials said the number applications from black students jumped by 5 percent from last year, while the number of Chicano/Latino applicants grew by 8 percent and Native American applicants went up by 3 percent.

The overall number of applications increased by 4.7 among prospective freshman over last year, and 4.2 percent for transfer students.

The applicants represented the bulk of a record 206,000 people who applied for admission to University of California campuses across the state.

Prospective freshmen will be notified about admission decisions by April 1, and admitted students will have until May 1 to notify the university whether they will actually enroll. Transfer students will be notified by April 30 about admission decisions and will have until June 1 to commit.

UCLA applicants represented the bulk of a record 206,000 students who applied to University of California campuses across the state — a 6.4 percent increase over fall 2015 and the 12th straight year of record-setting application numbers, UC officials said.

“The increase in applications from Californians will help us reach our goal of adding 5,000 more undergraduate residents this year and 10,000 over three years,” UC President Janet Napolitano said.  ”In particular, our efforts to boost the number of applicants transferring from California’s community colleges are paying off.”
