CJ ENM, U.S. studios to remake 2 popular Korean films

SEOUL, Nov. 29 (Yonhap) — Entertainment giant CJ ENM will produce American versions of two popular Korean films in collaboration with leading U.S. studios, the Korean firm said Thursday.

Currently, CJ is in the process of jointly remaking the 2011 Korean mega-hit film “Sunny” into the U.S. edition called “Bye Bye Bye” with HartBeat Production. Screenwriting is currently underway, with an eye to launch shooting in the latter half of 2019.

Universal Studios will be in charge of investment and distribution for the U.S. movie.

Another CJ-distributed Korean film, “Miss Granny” released in 2014, will be made into a U.S. version, titled “Ms. Granny,” together with Tyler Perry Studios and MGM, according to CJ.

“Various elements reminiscent of school-day memories, friendship and music seem to have appealed (to U.S. production firms),” a CJ official said, referring to the remake of “Sunny.”

“Conditions have been arranged to fully utilize Universal Studio’s financing, marketing and distribution networks in the process of producing and releasing its U.S. film.”
