23 cases of damage reported to cultural assets in quake-hit region

November 16, 2017

A series of quakes as big as 5.4 magnitude that hit the southeastern city of Pohang on Wednesday has damaged some historic buildings and artifacts in the region, the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) said Thursday.

The state-run agency, responsible for oversight and preservation of the country’s cultural assets, said 23 cases of damage from the earthquakes have been reported so far.

Broken roof tiles on traditional buildings and temples were found to be the most frequent damage with 12 reports, followed by cracks in walls and dislodged stone pagodas.

According to the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, national treasures located in the region, such as the 1,300-year-old astronomical observatory Cheomseongdae in the historic city of Gyeongju, south of Pohang, didn’t sustain any damage.

The CHA said the relevant government agencies will continue to check on the conditions of important cultural assets in the region.
