SEOUL  (Yonhap) — South Korean forward Son Heung-min bagged his third goal in the English Premier League (EPL) Monday, but couldn’t stop his club, Tottenham Hotspur, from crashing out of the league title race with a 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

Starting as the right winger at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in London, Son made it 2-0 for Tottenham with a right-foot strike in the 44th minute after receiving a pass from Christian Eriksen. It was Son’s third EPL goal of the season and first since Dec. 28 last year against Watford.

However, Tottenham squandered their two-goal lead in the second half and walked away with a draw as their title hopes evaporated. Tottenham needed to win all three of their remaining league matches to catch the leader Leicester City.

Leicester, founded 1884, were crowned with their first top-flight title with two matches to spare.

Son was making his first start for the Spurs since April 2 against Liverpool. The 23-year-old had been coming off the bench in the second half recently as teammates Erik Lamela and Dele Alli were showing impressive performances.

But with Alli suspended for three games for punching West Bromwich Albion midfielder Claudio Yacob, Son had a chance to showcase his skills. The former Bayer Leverkusen player fired his first shot in the 24th before launching a left-foot strike from a distance in the 28th that went wide.

After Harry Kane put the visitors in front in the 35th, Son extended the lead to 2-0 as his shot beat Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. This was also Son’s seventh goal in the 2015-16 season including League Cup competitions. The South Korean had last scored on March 17 against Borussia Dortmund at the UEFA Europa League.

Son was replaced by midfielder Ryan Mason in the 65th as Tottenham tried to keep the lead after surrendering a goal to Gary Cahill seven minutes earlier. But Tottenham conceded an equalizer in the 83rd to Eden Hazard and settled for a draw.

After Tottenham complete the EPL season with matches against Southampton on Sunday and Newcastle United on May 15, Son is expected to join the South Korean men’s Olympic football team in July.
