San Francisco’s first-ever Korean American elected official, Supervisor Jane Kim, 38, announced her bid for the California State Senate District 11 seat Wednesday.

After taking her current position in 2010 for District 6, she beat out competitors last November by taking 67 percent of votes.

Kim, a progressive Democrat, will run against Scott Wiener, another supervisor and former deputy city attorney.

Her time in the District 6 seat has put focus on affordable housing and tenants rights.

A New York City native, Kim is the daughter of South Korean immigrants and a graduate of Stanford University. She later received a law degree from UC Berkeley.
