Samsung smartband tops U.S. consumer study

July 13, 2016

SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. topped a U.S. quality test for the fitness smartband segment, industry watchers said Wednesday.

According to the research conducted by industry tracker J.D. Power and Associates, Samsung Electronics won the highest consumer satisfaction ratings for a smartband for fitness.

With the satisfaction rating– based on performance, reliability, features, price, ease of operation, style and warranty — calculated on a 1,000-point scale, J.D. Power said the South Korean firm earned a score of 859.

U.S.-based Garmin Ltd. followed with 836, trailed by Samsung’s smaller South Korean rival LG Electronics Inc., with 827.

The study was based on 2,696 customers who purchased a smartband between May and June.

Last month, Samsung unveiled two new fitness wearables — the fitness tracker Gear Fit2 and wireless earbuds Gear IconX — as part of efforts to grab a large slice of the fast-growing wearable device market.

The Gear Fit 2, a followup to the original Gear Fit released in 2014, comes with GPS sensors for more accurate measuring of distance and heart rates.
