Rep. Mike Honda attends music event for Korean “correcting history” campaign

A night of music unfolded at the Manna Methodist Church in Los Angeles on Saturday, attended by Rep. Mike Honda and Korean community leaders under a “correcting history” campaign.

The event was hosted by the campaign’s organization, which facilitates discussion of the Korean community’s interest in correcting its history with Japan. It says Japan has denied and distorted facts about Japanese soldiers’ use of Korean comfort women during World War II.

Proceeds from the event were donated under Honda’s name, who recently saw victory in the primary election and who has received the support of the Korean community.

Honda, a Japanese American who has spent seven terms in Congress, said at the event that the comfort women issue is not about history or about the Asian region but about human rights and sexual violence.

He’d like to see the Japanese government take responsibility for its actions during the war for a peaceful future in the same way that the Japanese American community is aware of it, he said.

Participating in musical performances were soprano singer Choi Jung-won, bassist Kim Lee-sak, pianist Seo Ji-hye, the Elders Choir of Southern California, the Christian Herald Mission Choir, the choir of the New Life Vision Church, Evergreen, the CTS Women’s Choir and the Los Angeles Chamber Choir.

Also present at the event were former Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang, Cerritos Councilmember Joseph Cho, Rev. Young Ik Byun and Han Ki-hyung of the Holy City Movement.
