N. Korea asks US for peace treaty, US has ‘no interest’

North Korea expressed a desire to pursue a peace treaty with the U.S. It also wants to be able to freely pursue its nuclear weapons development program simultaneously.

For the U.S., the two primary terms of the proposal are mutually exclusive. In other words, North Korea can’t have its cake and eat it too.

But the communist country gave it a shot, which was immediately rejected on Tuesday by Special Envoy for North Korea Policy Sung Kim who spoke on behalf of the U.S.

“With regard to the North Korean statement suggesting we enter into peace treaty discussions, we have no interest in entering into any such discussions,” he said at Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing according to Yonhap.

“For us, the priority focus has to be the nuclear issue. As they often do, I’m afraid the North Koreans have their priorities wrong by suggesting that we sort of jump some steps, some very important steps, and start peace treaty negotiations.”

Part of the issue is that denuclearization is the top priority for this administration in regards to anything related to North Korea. Unfortunately, it seems almost impossible to get them to even consider a dialogue on the topic.

“And frankly at the moment, we can’t even get the North Koreans, as you mentioned the Foreign Ministry statement, we can’t even get the North Koreans to focus on denuclearization as a goal. So that’s why have not resumed any negotiations,” he said.

Peace treaty? Let me tell the young man what is real peace about. Peace treaty is not about the writings with signatures on it. The real peace begins at south and north, from mutual exchanges in communications and dialogues in responsible respectful manner, with the wholeheart devotion to commitments and promises ever made. When made commitments and promises are done into reality and further open up into the future commitments and promises , then the peace will move on and begin to be imprinted. It is written by actions on commitments and promises made.it is not mouth playing, or a doctrine or stupid idealism, but written by actions.

US doesn’t want to give North Korea a peace treaty because of their nuclear development? How come the US is allowed to possess nuclear weapons while other smaller countries are forbidden from it. Double standards. Ideally, all countries need to stop possessing nuclear weapons.

C’mon, John! Use your fucking brain, you nitwit. Sure, let’s allow a dictator access to technology that could kill millions, or even destroy the planet. I didn’t think they had internet access in Mississippi…stay off the internet.

Just fyi – the only one who has ever used this kind of technology killing hundreds of thousands of people is *drumroll* the USA. Leaving your insults aside – is there any logical argument for letting the mass murderers get away with “we’re the only one who should own and use this kind of weapon because … uhm … erm …”? It’s like giving weapons to spree killers exclusively.

What will North Korea do? As far as I understand, Iran, North Korea, and Russia will join together to try and destroy America and Israel. The oil driling in the arctic is the premised used by the Russians to institute a base closer to the US. We have no real air defence, and the arctic defence is not near capable of staving off an invasion…

    • Freeflight

      October 21, 2015 at 10:31 AM

Oh noes it’s the Axis of Evil!
If Russians have a base somewhere it’s sole purpose is to “Attack the US”.

When the US has over 700+ bases and/or military installations on foreign soil, they only exist to spread “freedom and democracy”, oh and for “protecting US national interests” on the other side of the world.

I think john has a valid, badly explained point. We are the only country in the world who has nuked another, japan. From the perpective of the north koreans it is concerning that we posses a monstrous nuclear arsenal! If for some unforeseen future reason a war between north korea and the us ever erupted and we felt threatened enough who is to say that whatever president we have at the time wouldn’t order a nuclear strike. Keep in mind who the front runner in the republican party is right now. It might seem far fetched for us to think that could happen. But for the north koreans even a far fetched possibility that ends in their country being melted down by nuclear weapons is very very frightening. So, I think other countries that feel threatened by us would be more likely to not pursue nukes if we atleast began a process to disarm ourselves.

  11. WEP

    October 21, 2015 at 9:07 AM

The reason why the United States has nuclear weaponry is the result of history. Aside from Communism, following WWII the Soviet Union was amping up their military power in ways that the United States had no ability to compete with. At least not on the scale of man-power. Normally, this wouldn’t be all that big of a problem but the Soviet Union eventually started getting cocky. Keep in mind that the United States transformed into a global superpower following the second World War, they knew that any growth in Soviet influence posed a threat to their authority. The problem is that military power, particularly violence; moves people. So the United States was left with a few options. Either compete with the Soviets as far as numbers go, or find something bigger and scarier to compete with them. Considering how the dropping of the atomic bombs in Japan changed the outcome of the war, they deemed that effort worth looking into for further development. And that they did. Unfortunately, as it should have been expected, this inspired Russia to build comparable weapons of their own; essentially initiating global thermonuclear war as a standard aspect of military power. But nowadays, much like a lot of other things, we have come to realize that maybe these weapons aren’t so good. The problem is that we can’t just get rid of them. The fact of the matter is that the game has changed in ways that can never be reverted. In other words, the horse is already kind of out of the barn on that one; theres simply no going back. But history is history, and it cannot be changed, as much as we may want it to. Another issue is the fact that it would be very difficult to properly dispose of all these weapons. Knowing this, the only thing we can to to prevent global catastrophe is to monitor and control the growth of nuclear weaponry, which unfortunately at the same time makes us look like hypocrites.

    October 21, 2015 at 9:22 AM

Unfortunately, WEP, I’m afraid you are correct. The other unfortunate part of history is that too many times we, america, have used that authority to topple legitamate regimes, invade countries to take control of regional resources, and killed countless innocent people in the process. So once again, it is not unjustified for our adversaries to laugh at us when we as the super power ask them to trust that we will be fair and think of them before we make decisions about how the eorld will be run.
