When Tiger Woods broke out onto the scene at the turn of the century, golf’s global popularity began to reach new heights. As such, golf courses got busier and to keep up with demand, developers started building golf courses.

Japan was part of that movement. In fact, even before the Woods craze began, the isolated nation saw the number of courses grow from hundreds to thousands just before the sport exploded according to The Independent newspaper. What resulted over a decade later was a surplus of golf courses, many of which were eventually abandoned.

To make use of these properties, the country is making an investment in clean energy by installing solar energy farms along the vast tracts of land.

The solution is a welcome one especially following the 2011 Fukushima disaster that has generated skepticism toward nuclear power as an energy source.

The Japanese government has already began one installment of the project in the form of a 23 megawatt solar plant Business Insider reports. There is also 92 megawatt solar plant on its way, which would be able to provide enough power for approximately 30,000 households.
