Good News: HS football player born with one hand sets record for receiving yards

Kris Silbaugh broke Cambridge Spring High School’s 17-year-old record for all-time receiving yards (917 yards to be exact) on Tuesday after catching a 43-yard touchdown pass in a win against the team’s crosstown rivals.

The high school senior is 6-foot-3 and runs a 4.4 second 40-yard dash — a number that would be competitive even by professional standards. Sounds about normal on paper for a young athlete with a bright future.

But he was also born with one hand.

“It was just some sort of birth defect,” Silbaugh told USA Today. “Nothing was wrong. It has never stopped me. I just don’t let it. Never have.”

That attitude became responsible for his reputation as a serious threat on the field. He made the varsity team as a freshman and is now a player that his team count on to win games.

“It went from the guys being excited to see if he could actually do something to them counting on him to make plays,” Head Coach Justin Grubbs said. “It’s just amazing to see what he’s able to do. He makes catches that you wouldn’t believe. He’s a guy that defenses have to have a game plan for and he’s just so fast.”

Silbaugh also plays basketball and volleyball, but for now he’s focusing on helping his team win while trying to break other records during his final year with the team.
