‘Designer babies’ come with good, bad consequences

Designer babies refer to genetically engineered babies that are created through advanced reproductive technology.

Such technology allows parents and doctors to screen a human embryo in order to find any genetic disorders. After choosing the healthy embryo, only the selected one is implanted back in the mother’s womb.

This process is called Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Another method is in vitro fertilisation (IVF). This process allows the fertilization of an egg with a sperm in a test tube, which occurs outside of the mother. By doing so, parents and doctors can reduce the chances of a baby being born with a genetic disorder.

The pros of designer babies are that it makes a better understanding of genetics for biologists and genealogists. It also reduces the chances of inherited medical conditions like obesity and cancer, while giving a child a healthy life devoid of mitochondrial disorders.

Moreover, it can increase the human life span by more than 30 years as well as prevent genetic diseases like Alzheimer’s.

However, while there are many positive aspects to designer babies, there are negative sides as well.

The cons of designer babies are that the selected embryo can be terminated if the process is not done correctly; this process is still not 100 percent ready to safely experiment.

The possibility of social consequences increases, too.

The existence of designer babies can also create a huge gap within society as designer babies will be genetically, and even intellectually superior to non-designer babies.

    yes..I like the basic concepts behind Second Life but it seems incredibly outdated and when I played it was intensely non-intuitive / user friendly to an extent that made EVE look like a game for toddlers. thanks from
