August 24, 2016

SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) — A domestic film about the ill-fated life of Korea’s last princess surpassed 5 million in attendance on Wednesday, data showed.

“The Last Princess,” starring Son Ye-jin in the title role, hit the milestone at 2 p.m., on the 15th day of its run, according to its distributor Lotte Entertainment.

The film by director Hur Jin-ho follows the dramatic life of Deokhye, the last princess of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), as she is forced to leave her motherland during Japan’s 1910-45 occupation of the Korean Peninsula.

It became the sixth film to exceed the 5 million mark this year after “Train to Busan,” “A Violent Prosecutor,” “The Wailing,” “Operation Chromite” and “Tunnel.” The five are also Korean films.

Industry insiders predicted the upward trend for “The Last Princess” would continue for the time being as it currently is at No. 2 on local box office charts next to “Tunnel.”
