Six hundred students gathered inside Cal State Fullerton Saturday for a full-length practice of the new SAT.

Students from 7th to 11th grade sat for the redesigned test beginning at 8 a.m.

“My kid took a practice exam when she was in 7th grade, but she’s in 9th grade now and I felt the need to prepare her for the new test,” said Carol Jeon, one of the parents who came out to the event with her daughter, Kathleen Jeon.

“My mom registered for this without me knowing, but I do need this if I’m planning on attending college soon. I came out so early today, and I might as well do a good job,” said Alice Kim, an 11th grader.

The event was co-organized by the Korea Times, Radio Seoul and Elite Educational Institute.

“Opinions are divided on whether the new SAT is easier or harder,” said Andy Lee, Elite vice president. “Students will get better results by taking a practice test and becoming familiar with the new structure.”

Test answers from the practice will be given analysis at the 6th College Expo on Aug. 29, to be held inside Sa-Rang Community Church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The new SAT, which will begin administration next year, includes among its changes the removal of incorrect response penalties and obscure vocabulary, an optional essay section, more complex reading passages and an emphasis on reasoning and critical thinking.
