S. Koreans top list of colon cancer incidents

South Koreans’ incidence of colon cancer was found to be the highest in the world according to a recent study.

Korea University Guro Hospital, World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found that the country topped the list among 184 others with 45 people per 100,000 were inflicted with the health issue.

Slovakia (42.7) had the second most according to the data while Hungary (42.3) and Denmark  (40.5) followed on the list.

The incidence of colon cancer was significantly higher on the Asian continent (17.2) compared to the world average (13.7).

When the study observed only men, the numbers jumped to 58.7 people per 100,000 in South Korea, but Slovakia (61.6) saw the biggest increase followed by Hungary (58.9).

When limited to women, Korea’s incidence of colon cancer dropped to 33.5 people per 100,000 making it the fifth highest in the world.

Norway (35.8) topped the list for that specific category.

Most people who are inflicted with this type of cancer show no symptoms, but cancer survival rates can decrease rather quickly so early detection is critical.

“You should try to reduce meat and sugar intake in addition to at least 30 minutes of exercise per day,” professor Oh Sang-chul of the Cancer Center at Guro Hospital.
