NY Korean, Chinese communities collaborate on college fair

The New York Korean American and Chinese American communities will come together for a large-scale college fair, to open Feb. 20 next year.

The effort will be the first of its kind, held inside the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel in Flushing and organized by the Korea Times, the Chinese-language daily World Journal, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in New York and the All Asian Network.

The fair is expected to draw about 100 college-related consulting businesses, prep schools and financial loan services, as well as school representatives.

College-bound students and parents will have a chance to consult with experts and receive advice on choosing majors, creating goals and taking on volunteering and leadership roles.

“There have been a lot of college fairs in the past, but this is meaningful in that it brings together the Korean and Chinese communities in a huge way for the first time on the East Coast,” said Daniel Park, president of All Asian Network.

Park said there are an estimated 60,000 Asian high school students in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He expects about 3,000 to show to the fair.
