La Palma Police Department in Orange County promoted Sgt. Terry Kim, making him the station’s first Korean American captain.

Kim is a 19-year veteran who was also its first Korean American police officer, the LPPD said Wednesday. In his new role, he will overlook LPPD’s traffic and SWAT units.

After immigrating to Southern California when he was 14, Kim graduated from Cal State Long Beach in 1994 with a criminology degree. He was promoted to LPPD sergeant nine years ago.

“As La Palma Police Department’s first Korean police officer, it’s an honor to be promoted to captain,” Kim said. “I will do my best to volunteer and engage more actively with the Korean community.”

The ceremony will take place at La Palma City Hall on Oct. 6 at 5 p.m.
