The Korea Times Music Contest for children, now in its 45th year, came to a close inside the Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles Saturday night.

The annual contest invites young musicians ages 8 to 14 — pianists, violinists and cellists — to compete for prizes in two divisions.

Thirty hopefuls participated this year.

“This year’s contestants are even more skilled than last year’s winners,” said Jin Jung-woo, a judge. “These are young students in the process of studying music, so we hope they can apply themselves not thinking of this as a ranking but as a chance to check their own skills.’

The grand prize in strings went to Irene Kim and Jessica Lee, and the piano grand prize to Lucy Kim and Seo Mi-hyun.
