Storyboard Artist, Animator and Director Peter Sohn
Demonstrates His Voice Acting Talents in Disney Pixar’s ‘Monsters University’

“It’s safe to say that as a group, people at Pixar have some of the best jobs anywhere. If that’s true, then it logically follows that Pete Sohn is even more deserving of employment envy than most of his co-workers. You see, it’s pretty easy to envy the folks who work to bring the films to life visually. And, it’s pretty easy to envy the folks whose voices are immortalized by being lent (in one form or another) to a standout character in one of Pixar’s future classic movies,” one blogger wrote.

Peter Sohn, 36, is a storyboard artist, animator and director at Disney Pixar Animation Studios. If that’s not interesting enough, he is also the voice of Emile in Ratatouille (2007) and Squishy in Monsters University (2013). And Russell, the Asian boy from Up (2009), was based on him. Sohn later voiced Russell in the corresponding short, George & A.J.

He says it’s more of a coincidence that all those characters look like him but one has to admit that it’s hard not to notice the resemblance.

Sohn was born and raised in New York. His Korean immigrant parents sold fruits and vegetables for living and Sohn went on to attend CalArts, dubbed “the Harvard Business School of Animation” by The Los Angeles Times. His artistic talent immediately shined through early in his career. While attending CalArts, Sohn got a summer job working on Brad Bird-directed animated feature The Iron Giant (1999). After graduating, Sohn worked at the Walt Disney Company and Warner Brothers before moving on to Pixar in 2000.

He started his career with Pixar in the art and story departments for ‘Finding Nemo’ (2003) and then worked on The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille, and WALL·E (2008). He made his directorial debut with the short film Partly Cloudy in 2009.

Sohn worked solely as an animator at the beginning of his career but he longed to be an entertainer, which eventually led him to do voice acting. Sohn worked as voice actor on video games and short films but Monsters University is the first feature-length film that he has worked on solely as a voice actor, showcasing his comedic talents. Monsters University‘s first-time feature director Dan Scanlon describes Sohn as a “very talented artist.”
