San Francisco celebrates Korea with annual festival

The 22nd Korean Day Cultural Festival held at Union Square in San Francisco.

Korean tradition, K-pop and a costume parade set Union Square in San Francisco abuzz Saturday at the 22nd Korean Day Cultural Festival.

The free annual event was put on by the Korean association in San Francisco.

A health clinic by the San Francisco Lions Club, catered food and about 15 booths — among them Korean Air, Asiana Airlines and Hanmi Bank — were set up near the main stage.

Folk songs with traditional instruments performed by OngDance Company, Choi Soo-kyung dance company and Kim Il-hyun were joined by EGO, a samulnori team from the University of California, Berkeley, and students performing a fan dance from a Korean language school and taekwondo demonstrations. Attendees also participated in a Bollywood fitness bellydance.

SXC, Spark Crew and Terry Oh, contestants from this year’s San Francisco K-POP Festival, performed live at the event.

The festival was attended by notable Koreans from the community, including San Francisco Consul General Han Dong-man and city supervisor David Chiu.
