United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon gifted a handwritten banner to President Barack Obama for his 54th birthday, the White House announced Thursday.

Written on the banner is a four-character Chinese idiom which means “The highest virtue is like water.”

Obama, who was handed the banner in person, pointed to the character for “water” and said he recognized it.

Ban wrote Obama’s name in Chinese characters with the meaning “profound, friendly and strong.”

Obama celebrated his birthday Tuesday.
