Korean American elected to NYC education council

May 13, 2015

One Korean American parent was elected to New York City’s Citywide and Community Education Council, where 325 seats were up for grabs this year.

Henry Choi will serve as a member of Community Education Council 24.

According to the city’s Department of Education, the council serves to give parents voices in the decisions that affect their children.

Choi, who has a daughter who is enrolled at Q119 in Glendale, said he also attended public schools in the city.

Applying for the seat came from a desire to help both his daughter and other students achieve more through education, he said.

Interest in the effort has doubled since 2013, from 729 applicants to 1,290, the department said.

Members serve two-year terms and will begin in fall.
