NY Met, Korean govt sign first MOU

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the South Korean government shook hands on their first memorandum of understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation Thursday.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will give the Met $1 million from 2016 to 2018 to help the museum install its planned Korean art exhibit, slated for 2018, including programs related to the project and for a jointly organized scholarship.

Museum President Daniel Weiss and Korean Cultural Service New York Director Oh Seung-je signed the MOU inside the Met’s Asian wing.

Weiss said the MOU carries a larger meaning because 2018 is also the year South Korea will host the PyongChang Winter Olympics. The Korean exhibition will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the museum’s Korea gallery.

“This MOU is the first result of Korea’s effort to spread its culture and to expand Hallyu by joining hands with the world’s leading museums,” Oh said.
