Korean architect designs memorial for fallen Boston Marathon officer

A memorial for an officer who was shot and killed during the Boston Marathon incident will soon be underway, and behind its design is Korean American architect Meejin Yoon.

Yoon, an associate professor of architecture at the Masschusetts Institute of Technology, revealed the design of the structure Friday during the 1-year memorial ceremony of MIT officer Sean Collier, 26.

Collier was killed on April 18, 2013 by marathon bombing suspects as they attempted to flee the area.

A temporary memorial currently stands at the spot where he was killed.

Yoon said the “Collier Memorial” was designed with the officer’s bravery in mind and was inspired by MIT’s slogan, “Mens et Manus,” or “mind and hand.”

The memorial will resemble a large hand in the form of five walls protruding from a single center, she said.

A graduate of the architecture programs at Cornell University and Harvard University, Yoon began teaching at MIT in 2001. She is the director of its undergraduate architecture program.
