US proposes celebration of 70th anniversary of Korean independence

August 5, 2015

A resolution for the United States to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Korean independence — coming August 15 — was brought to the House of Representatives last week.

Introduced by Congresswoman Grace Meng, H.Res.407 requests that the House “recognizes the Republic of Korea’s strategic, political, and economic importance to the U.S.” by “applauding the Korean American community for the important role it plays in the United States-Korea relationship” and being “proud to honor important ethnic holidays, including the goals and ideals of Independence Day in the Republic of Korea.”

The text calls for a reaffirmation of the friendship between the two countries.

The resolution was passed over to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

In 1945, Korea saw liberation from 35 years under Japanese colonial rule.
