Kang Pil-gu, the husband of celebrity news anchor Kim Joo-ha, has been sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, for assaulting his wife during an argument.

Kim testified that her husband had hit her frequently, beginning in July 2008. On one occasion, she said, Kang struck her in the face, causing an injury that required two to four weeks of treatment.

After nine years of marriage, the couple is now divorcing. Kim filed for divorce after discovering that Kang was having an affair with another woman.

The judge found Kang guilty, saying he should take responsibility for his actions.

“Domestic violence is a serious matter that fundamentally destroys the trust between two spouses,” the judge said in his ruling. “However, I took into consideration that he has no prior record, he admitted to his crime, and he deeply regrets it.”
