SF Korean War memorial holds groundbreaking ceremony

The groundbreaking ceremony for San Francisco’s Korean War memorial kicked off the project at the corner of Lincoln Blvd. and Sheridan Avenue in the Presidio Saturday.

“Korean people love peace,” said Quentin Kopp, president of the Korean War Memorial Foundation that prepared the project, as he opened the ceremony in Korean.

He said the memorial would become a landmark of remembrance for soldiers who gave their service toward protecting Korean democracy.

In attendance were a group of community leaders, including San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, former Secretary of State George Shultz, Korean Consul General Han Dong-man, South Korean Assemblyman Kim Jung-hoon and Korean War veterans with their families.

The memorial will stand adjacent to the San Francisco National Cemetery, the resting place of 2,237 Korean War veterans.

Han handed the project $1 million from the South Korean government in a show of gratitude toward those who sacrificed their lives in the war.

The $5 million memorial site was procured by Senator Dianne Feinstein and has raised more than $2.2 million as of April this year.
