Saving Sophie: Couple holds marathon fundraiser

Eight-year-old Sophie Kim has a genetic disorder called Ullrich, which means her muscles are extremely weak.

Her parents, Andrew and Eunice Kim, could not do much when their little girl’s legs stopped being able to walk when she was 4.

Saving Sophie, a fundraiser started by the Kims for the San Jose Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon & 10K, will send all proceeds to CureCMD, where the money will be used to raise awareness and fund research for sufferers of the condition.

Ullrich is a form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, or CMD, in which muscles do not repair and grow because they break down faster than they should. It currently has no cure and no treatment.

“Although [Sophie] never complains about her condition, you can tell sometimes by looking at her eyes that when she watches other kids, she wants to walk again, and run, jump in the bouncy house, swim in the pool, and dance to all her favorite songs,” the project description on CrowdRise reads.

Saving Sophie has raised $70,803 so far, with a $100,000 goal.

The half marathon will be held Oct. 5.
