S. Korean Kim So-hui secures at least silver in taekwondo

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 17 (Yonhap) — South Korean taekwondo fighter Kim So-hui has secured at least a silver in the women’s -49kg at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Kim defeated Yasmina Aziez of France 1-0 to reach the gold medal contest at Carioca Arena 3 on the first day of taekwondo competition.

Kim, a two-time world champion, will face Tijana Bogdanovic of Serbia for a chance to win her first Olympic gold.

The final is scheduled to start at 10 p.m. Wednesday. Kim’s medal will be South Korea’s first in taekwondo in Rio.

On the opposite side of the bracket, Wu Jingyu of China, the world No. 1 and two-time defending gold medalist, lost in the quarterfinals to Bogdanovic. Kim would have met Wu in the final.
