Human Rights Watch, an international organization specializing in human rights advocacy and research, honored North Korean defector Shin Dong-hyuk at its annual Los Angeles dinner on Nov.11 for his outspoken efforts toward closing down his native country’s prison camps.

The 31-year-old escapee was born into lifelong forced labor and experienced the horror of watching his brother and mother’s brutal public execution.
