Human Rights Watch, an international organization specializing in human rights advocacy and research, honored North Korean defector Shin Dong-hyuk at its annual Los Angeles dinner on Nov.11 for his outspoken efforts toward closing down his native country’s prison camps.

The 31-year-old escapee was born into lifelong forced labor and experienced the horror of watching his brother and mother’s brutal public execution.

Read the rest of his story over at Human Rights Watch’s website here and watch the video above to hear accounts from other prison camp survivors.
