Foreign ministry, Kumho Asiana sign deal on emergency flights

SEOUL, June 28 (Yonhap) — The foreign ministry and Kumho Asiana Group on Tuesday signed a deal designed to swiftly evacuate South Korean nationals from disaster-stricken parts of the world.

Under the agreement, the conglomerate’s flagship unit, Asiana Airlines Inc., will send chartered flights to areas hit by earthquakes, terrorist attacks or other disasters to quickly transport South Korean nationals to safety, the ministry said in a press release.

Asiana will provide the evacuation service at a cost, at the request of the ministry.

The deal, signed earlier in the day between Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and Kumho Asiana Chairman Park Sam-koo, also calls for establishing a hotline to facilitate communication.

The ministry said it has sought to strengthen its response to emergency situations around the world, especially after handling the evacuation of South Koreans from Nepal following the massive earthquake in April 2015 and during the civil war in Libya in 2011 and 2014.
