Two dogs cloned by Hwang Woo-suk have been selected as rescue dogs, Yonhap reports.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Security’s National 119 Rescue Headquarters said Dasol and Nara have been chosen to save lives.

The two were cloned by Hwang and donated to the ministry in 2013. Dasol, born in February 2013, is a British springer spaniel who was cloned from Suan, a rescue dog active in the Gyeonggi Province fire department.

Nara, a German shepherd born in October 2012, was cloned from a security dog.

Hwang was a pioneer in stem-cell research and first succeeded in cloning a dog in 2005. He was considered one of the top researchers in his field before being charged with embezzlement and bioethics law violations, for which he received a two-year suspended jail sentence.

Since the controversy, Hwang has kept a relatively low profile at the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, which his supporters established.
