Choo Shin-soo clears waivers

August 19, 2014

Choo Shin-soo has cleared waivers and is now eligible to be traded — though there’s no chance of that actually happening, according to a CBS Sports report on Monday.

With their playoff hopes long gone, the Texas Rangers have put just about all their high-priced players through waivers — including Choo, Yu Darvish and Adrian Beltre – but found no takers for any of them.

CBS Sports reporter Jon Heyman explained, “Teams didn’t put in claims on at least Darvish and Beltre because there’s no probability of a quick waiver deal with a star of that stature. With Choo and Andrus having off years, perhaps no one wanted to assume their contracts at the moment.”

The Rangers are on the hook for $116 million more over six years with Choo, even after this year.

Darvish and Beltre’s contracts are much more manageable. Darvish has three years left on his six-year contract for $60 million, and Beltre’s five-years for $80 million contract expires after 2015 season.
