Chicago’s Korean American community gave back to the city’s needy in a big way with Sharing the Holiday Spirit Food Drive, now in its fifth year.

Hosted by the Chade Foundation and Bee Sales Company, the event kicked off Saturday morning at Kennedy-King College.

The drive gave out 1,600 food baskets each filled with 10 to 12 servings of turkey, cranberry sauce, gravy, green beans and potatoes to the needy, enough food to feed about 19,000 people.

Chade Foundation President Kim Tae-min thanked Korean American organizations for their help and said he feels businesses have a duty to give back to the community.

The drive will continue, he said.

He was joined at the event by Chicago Consul General Kim Sang-il, Bee Sales Company Vice President Kim Ae-run, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.

White said in a speech that he hopes the bond between the Korean American community and the overall Chicago community strengthens through efforts like the food drive.

The event was supported by the Korean Beauty Supply Association, MB Financial Bank, BBCN Bank, the Chicago Korean General Consulate and the Chicago Korean American Chamber of Commerce.
