Five people died and two were injured when a tent caught fire at a camping site on Gangwhado Island, Incheon, west of Seoul, on Sunday.

Firemen took 15 minutes to put out the blaze, which started at about 2 a.m.

The dead included a man, 37, surnamed Lee, his sons, 6, and 11, an unidentified man and a girl.

“It took only a minute for the tent to burn down,” Incheon Ganghwa Fire Station chief Ryu Hwan-hyeong said. “Materials used for the tent caught fire easily.”

Lee’s son, 8, and a man named Park, 43, were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Park, who was in a nearby tent, rushed into the burning tent to try to save the others.

“Everyone but the boy was unconscious,” Park told police. “He (Lee’s son) was standing inside the tent, so I saved him.”

Police are investigating what caused the fire.
