Actor Song Seung-heon to play villain in new movie

SEOUL, Nov. 7 (Yonhap) — Actor Song Seung-heon will play the villain in an upcoming movie set during the Japanese occupation of Korea, the film’s production company said Monday.

Song, one of the leading stars of “hallyu,” or the Korean pop culture craze worldwide, will play a cruel and cold-hearted prison director opposite protagonist Kim Chang-soo, played by Cho Jin-woong.

The film, with the Korean title “Captain Kim Chang-soo,” tells the story of a young Korean man who is sent to prison after killing a Japanese assassin of Korea’s Queen Myeongseong in the late 19th century. From there, he witnesses the persecution of his fellow countrymen and fights for independence from Japan.

Filming recently began after Song and Cho were cast in the title roles, BA Entertainment said.

It will be Song’s first attempt at playing a villain and director Lee Won-tae’s first commercial feature film.

The movie is set for release next year.
