S. Korea in all-out efforts to advance climate technology

SEOUL (Yonhap) — South Korea said Monday it would soon unveil a master plan to improve climate-related technologies in line with a campaign to curb gas emissions.

The government plans to craft the “climate technology roadmap” (CTR) within the first half of the year, according to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

The project will also be conducted with eight other authorities, including the industry and transportation ministries.

South Korea, a major Asian economy, aims to reduce carbon emissions by 37 percent from business-as-usual (BAU) levels by 2030.

It has earmarked a total of 1.3 trillion won (US$1.1 billion) for research and development projects this year alone.

The envisioned CTR will focus on four main sectors: a carbon reduction method, carbon use technology, a climate change adaption program and global cooperation, the ministry said.

“The climate technology has become a must for mankind to secure within a certain time in response to the desperate crisis of climate change,” Lee Jin-kyu, a senior ministry official, said.

The CTR will allow the government to conduct its R&D activities more effectively for attaining the goal and offer a specific technology management solution, he added.

At the Paris climate conference (COP21) held in late 2015, 195 member countries agreed to step up efforts to reduce carbon emissions and limit global warming.
