A Korean couple vacationing in Canada was killed after a thunderstorm caused a tree to fall on their car.

Their Kia Optima was headed southbound on Ontario County Road 6 when its roof was struck and crushed by a large tree branch, the Finger Lakes Times reported.

A lightning strike was the most likely cause of the 3-and-a-half-foot branch, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office told the FLT.

Both the driver, Kong Jeong-seok, 34, and his wife, Jin Sun-mi, 28, were students at the University of Maryland.

The couple married in June last year.

News of their death was delivered to their family through the Korean Embassy Consulate in New York City.
