Korean-American Helen Chong, a magistrate in Orange and Woodbridge in Virginia, has been named the recipient of the “2015 Young Lawyer of the Year Award” by the Virginia State Bar.

The Virginia State Bar is the administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Virginia whose purpose is to regulate, improve and advance the legal profession in the state with its 45 thousand members, and the award recognizes talented young lawyers who demonstrate dedicated service to the community.

Chong was awarded at this year’s Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach for her anti-cyber bullying program to help students and parents in the community.

“Chong has provided exceptional dedication to the conference, the legal profession, and the community,” a Virginia State Bar official said in the press release.

“As the Children and the Law Commission chair since 2012 and the Community Law Week co-chair since 2014, she has made a tremendous impact through each of her initiatives for the community. We cannot think of anyone more deserving of the Young Lawyer of the Year Award.”

A daughter of Chong Sung-rak, former president of Washington Korean American Sports Association, Chong was born and raised in Virginia.

She majored in political science at the University of Virginia in 2006 and graduated from George Mason University School of Law in 2011.

In 2012, Chong started a state-wide anti-bullying program after she found a need to help children and parents address the impacts of cyber bullying.

Chong’s father said he is “very proud of her service” to the community including the anti-cyber bullying program for students and parents.
