SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. has emerged as the best choice for the country’s young jobseekers, bumping Samsung Electronics Co. from the No. 1 spot, a poll showed Monday.

According to the survey of 1,490 university students and young jobseekers, taken by online job portal Saramin, 14.4 percent chose Hyundai Motor as the most favored company to work for. The percentage was up from 6.3 percent a year earlier.

Samsung Electronics, which had remained the top pick for the past seven years, came second with 14.1 percent, and state-run electricity company Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) placed third with 5.5 percent.

Rounding out the top ten were top food and feed company CJ Jeiljedang Corp., leading chemicals maker LG Chem Co., No. 2 carmaker Kia Motors Corp., state gas firm Korea Gas Corp., top air carrier Korean Air Lines Co., state nuclear power operator Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. and tech giant LG Electronics Inc.

High salary was the top reason for those who have picked Hyundai Motor, Samsung Electronics, LG Chem, Kia Motor and Korea Air Lines, while respondents who favored KEPCO and other state companies cited job security.

According to the findings, 16.5 percent of the respondents think academic background is the most important requirement for landing jobs at big companies.

The poll comes as South Korea remains gripped by high youth unemployment. The country’s youth jobless rate soared to a record high of 12.5 percent in February, with its headline unemployment rate standing at a six-year high of 4.9 percent.
