Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and even Psy. The Korean girl group Girls’ Generation topped them all to win the ‘Video of the Year’ honors at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards on Sunday night.

Perhaps the bigger surprised of the night was the fact that Psy was shut out.

The nine-member K-pop band was the surprise winner with their song “I Got A Boy.” CNN Entertainment reported “While massively popular in Asia, the reaction to its win from the American audience was muted – with scattered applause, but mostly a long, deafening silence.”

Perhaps the reaction from the Korean audience was the same for Psy’s being shut out. The most-watched video in YouTube history with 1.8 billion views or not, Psy failed to win in any of the three  categories – ‘Video of the Year,’ ‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘YouTube Phenomenon’ – he was nominated for.

Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany attended the awards ceremony at Pier 36 in New York City to accept the award on behalf of her group. Tiffany said that she and eight other members – Taeyeon, Yoona, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Seohyeon and Jessica – are currently working on new albums that will be released in Korea and Japan, and the group would like to release an album in the United States as well.

According to Variety magazine, at most 220,000 people watched the event online – a fraction of the 10.1 million who tuned in for the MTV Video and Music Awards in August.
