K/REATE, a gathering of young artists, is putting on a two-city exhibit in New York and Seoul of the South Korean flag — the Taegeuki — in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Korean independence, celebrated Aug. 15.

Designs from 70 creatives will be on show Aug. 14 to 21 inside Space Gabi Gallery in Manhattan and Aug. 7 to 21 at Gallery Ddung in Mapo District, South Korea.

The exhibit, titled “Remember and Create,” is a collaborative effort by K/REATE and Korean firm Yoon Design.

According to Sang Lee, K/REATE president, the exhibit will feature Taegeuki interpretations from 35 designers in Korea and 35 designers overseas.

“That we have these 70 designers participating working toward the same end is meaningful in itself,” Lee said.

Among K/REATE’s past projects are Cheer Up Korea, a graffiti effort following the Sewol ferry sinking tragedy last year, and others for the March 1 movement, comfort women and Hangeul Day.

“The Taegeuki has been with Korea through good and bad times as a representation of our country, but in an artistic sense, it’s also a great design,” Lee said. “I’m confident this exhibit will be a great opportunity to let people know about Korea through the exhibit’s variety of interpretations and expressions.”
