World No. 1 Inbee Park ‘really proud’ of S. Korea’s LPGA golfers

As the Women’s British Open nears, world No. 1 Inbee Park has her eyes set on finally completing her career grandslam at the Trump Turnberry Resort golf course in Scotland.

Despite golf being a heavily individualistic sport, those involved with the game have had no choice but to take notice of the recent dominance put on display by South Korean golfers on the LPGA.

So it made sense that during a press conference for the upcoming major on Tuesday, a question came up for Park about her thoughts on the wave of talented golfers from her own country.

“I knew that it was going to be our best year before we even started,” she said of South Korean golfers. “I think this year has been much better than what the field that we’ve been having for the last probably 20 years… They’ve played really good golf this year, and I’m really proud of them.”

Park is of course referencing the 11 wins in 18 events South Korean players have racked up so far in 2015. The total ties a record for most wins in a single season by South Korean players set in 2006 and tied in 2009.

Considering that there are 15 more events, the odds are in favor of the record being broken.

There hasn’t been one player who has been particularly dominant although rookie Kim Sei-young has shined with two victories and strong play in nearly every event she’s played including seven top-10 finishes.

That’s what makes this feat so much more impressive — that it’s spread out among a diverse group of winners all united under one nationality.

The Ricoh Women’s British Open begins on July 30 where American Mo Martin will defend the title.
