May 28, 2015

TOKYO (AP) — A volcano erupted on a small island in southern Japan on Monday morning, and authorities ordered residents to evacuate the island.

Mount Shindake erupted about 10 a.m. (0100 GMT) in spectacular fashion, sending a large, almost blackish plume into the sky.

About 140 people live on remote Kuchinoerabu island in the Ryukyu archipelago.

The Japan Meterological Agency raised the volcano alert level to five, the highest on its scale.
