Asian Americans, with 39.4 percent, make up the largest group of incoming freshmen in the University of California system, according to an annual report of fall admissions.

They were followed by Hispanics at 29.8 percent, whites at 23.1 percent and blacks at 4.1 percent.

Asian Americans also comprised the largest new student population last year.

The number of incoming out-of-state and foreign students increased to 20.2 percent of the freshman population this year. They made up 30.1 percent at UCLA, 29.8 percent at Berkeley, 28.4 percent at San Diego, 21.3 percent at Irvine, 18.9 at Davis, 6.9 percent at Riverside and 1.2 percent at Merced.

The reason the UC system is admitting more out-of-state and foreign students is to allow for financial expansion as well as more cultural diversity on campuses, said Diane Klein, spokeswoman for UC’s Office of the President.

The exact number of Korean students has not been announced. Last year, 2,538 Korean freshmen entered the UC system in the fall semester.
