SEOUL (Yonhap) — South Korea raised its travel alert on El Salvador Tuesday, advising its citizens to refrain from visiting the Latin American nation amid increased violence there.

The travel alert, which had previously applied only to a few regions, will now apply to the entire country, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

South Korea has a four-level travel warning system, of which the travel restraint advisory is the second level.

In explaining its decision, the ministry cited continued violence by gangs in the Central American country, where 641 people were killed in May and another 664 people killed in June.
